Between Us — Privacy Policy

Between Us is private trivia about you and your people: couples, friends and families building a shared archive of questions about their own history. This policy explains what the app collects, why, who it goes to, how long it is kept, and how to take it back.

What we collect

• Phone number: to create your account and sign you in, through Firebase Authentication. It is stored apart from your profile and nobody in your sets ever sees it.
• Display name: what the people in your sets see. You choose it when you sign up and can change it at any time.
• Your picture: optional, shown to the people in your sets.
• What you add to a set: questions, answers, notes, tags, dates, reactions, photos and video clips, stored so the people in that set can see them.
• Games you play remotely: who joined, the choices picked on multiple-choice cards, teams and scores, stored with the set. Who kept which card is stored on the card.
• Push notification token: a device identifier, used only to tell you about activity in your sets.
• What you send us: if you write to us, including through "Report a problem", we receive your email address, what you write, and the name and id of the set the report is about.

The app has no advertising, no analytics service and no tracking across other apps or websites.

How we use it

Only to run the app: creating your account, showing you your sets, letting the people in a set see what's been added, notifying you about activity, and answering you when you write to us.

We also look at anonymous totals across all accounts, such as how many cards were added in a week, to understand whether the app is working. These totals contain no names and are not linked to any account.

Who can see your information

Only the people in a set, whoever started it and anyone invited into it, and only for the sets they are actually in. Anyone in a set can invite someone new. If whoever started a set combines it into another, everything and everyone in it moves across. Nothing is public, searchable, or visible to anyone outside a set.

Who processes it for us

• Google Firebase stores and processes everything above on our behalf (sign-in, the database, photos and clips, server functions, notifications and our websites), under Google's data processing terms. Firebase's own libraries in the app also send Google basic technical information, such as device model, system version and how the libraries are performing, to keep its services working.
• Apple's push notification service: on an iPhone or iPad, notifications reach you through Apple. Firebase passes Apple your device's push token and the notification itself.
• Google reCAPTCHA: signing in by phone can show a check that you're not a robot, run by Google, which receives your IP address and basic information about your device or browser. The web viewer always uses it; the phone apps use it only when the silent check isn't available.
• Google Fonts: the app and our websites carry their own typefaces, but the web viewer can download extra fonts from Google's servers for characters ours don't include, such as emoji. Google then receives your IP address and basic information about your browser.
• Email: messages you send us pass through your email provider and ours.

Sharing

We don't sell your personal information, and we don't share it with anyone for advertising. It goes only to the service providers above, to run the app.

How long we keep it

• While you have an account, everything above is kept so the app works.
• When you delete your account, your name, picture, phone number, push token, photos and clips are removed, and so is the account itself. You choose what happens to the questions you wrote in sets other people are in, including sets you've left or been removed from. If you keep them, they stay for the others, shown as from someone who left. If you delete them, they are removed for everyone, with the answers, notes, photos, clips and reactions other people added to them, and they can't be recovered; a game in progress that uses one of them ends for everyone in it. Notes and reactions you left on other people's questions stay either way. Sets nobody else is in are deleted completely. Notifications already delivered to other people's phones can't be recalled.
• Server logs, which record things like an account id and which function ran, are kept for 30 days and then deleted automatically.
• Emails you send us, including reports, are kept for up to 12 months and then deleted.

Your choices, and withdrawing consent

• Notifications: turn them off in your phone's settings, or mute a single set from its ⋯ menu.
• Camera, photo library and microphone: the app asks only when you use them, and you can withdraw any of these in your phone's settings at any time.
• Leaving a set: leave any set someone else started from its ⋯ menu. Whoever started a set can remove someone from it.
• Your name and picture: change or remove them in Settings at any time.
• Deleting your account: in Settings, or on the web at usebetweenus.app/delete.html if you can't open the app. The web page and the app from version 1.0.0 (34) ask what should happen to the questions you wrote. Earlier versions of the app keep them; to delete them too, use the web page.
• Anything else: write to us at the address below.

Children

You must be 13 or older to use Between Us, and if you're under 18 you need a parent or guardian's permission. It is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe someone under 13 has an account, email hello@usebetweenus.app.

Changes

We'll update this policy if what we collect or how it's used changes, and change the date above when we do.
