Delete your Between Us account

You can delete your account in the app, on this page, or by email. If your account has a phone number, or an email address you can write from, you don’t need the app, even if you’ve uninstalled it.

Three ways to do it

In the app. On the screen with your sets, tap the person icon at the top to open Settings, then tap “Delete my account” under “Deleting your account”. If the app is showing “Check your email”, “Delete this account” is on that screen.
On this page, if your account has a phone number: confirm it with a text, below.
By email, if your account has an email address, including one from Google or Apple: write to hello@usebetweenus.app from that address.

We can only act on a request that comes from the address on your account, so we write back to that address to be sure the request is really yours. Say what should happen to the questions you wrote (see below); if you don’t, we’ll ask. Once you’ve answered from that address, we delete it the same way the app does, and write back when it’s done.

If your account has only a phone number, use the text step below, and please don’t send us the number: it can’t show the request is yours. If you sign in only with Apple and chose Hide My Email, the address on your account is one Apple made for Between Us, which you can’t write from, so delete it in the app on an iPhone or iPad.

What happens

Your account is deleted, with your name, your picture and any phone number, email address, or Google or Apple sign-in on it.
Every photo and clip you added is removed from every set.
You choose what happens to the questions you wrote in sets you share, including sets you’ve left or were removed from: keep them for the others, without your name, or delete them too. Deleting them removes them for everyone, with the answers, notes, reactions, photos and clips other people added to them, and they can’t be recovered; a game in progress that uses one ends for everyone in it. If the app doesn’t ask you (versions before 1.0.0 (34) don’t), it keeps them: to delete them too, use the text step below or write to us.
Anyone still in those sets is told plainly that you left.
Sets nobody else is in are deleted completely.

If you sign in with Apple, deleting in the app on an iPhone or iPad also asks Apple to end Between Us’s access to your Apple Account. Deleting on Android, here or by email can’t, so you can remove Between Us yourself under Sign in with Apple in your Apple Account settings.

If you sign in with Google, deleting your account doesn’t remove Between Us from your Google Account’s connections to third-party apps. You can remove it there.

This can’t be undone.

What stays, and why

What you added to sets other people still use, because it’s part of them: the questions you choose to keep, your notes and reactions on other people’s questions, which cards you kept, which sets you started, and your picks and scores in the last game played in each. None of it has your name: notes never did, and the rest shows as from someone who left.
A record that the account was deleted, so what stays can show as from someone who left. It has no name or picture on it, but it still lists the sets the account was in, which ones you pinned and the names of the groups you put them in, and other people in those sets can read it.
Server logs, which record things like an account id and which function ran. They’re kept for 30 days to find and fix problems, then deleted automatically.
Emails you’ve sent us, including a request to delete, as a record of what was asked, for up to 12 months.
Counts of sign-in texts and emails, kept so nobody can use the app to send messages in bulk. They hold a scrambled form of the phone number, email address or internet (IP) address used, never the thing itself, aren’t linked to your account, and are cleared out after the hour or day they count has passed.
Notifications already delivered to other people’s phones, which can’t be recalled.

How long it takes

In the app or on this page, your account is deleted straight away, while you wait. If you wrote a lot of questions and delete them too, it can take several minutes. By email, it’s deleted the same way once you’ve answered from the address on your account, and we write back when it’s done.
